Showgirl Rag Doll Justin’s Adventure

Justin3-lrJustine grew up in Las Vegas, attending grade school, middle school, and high school there. She made many friends along the way, Justine was just a very likable doll.

When Justine turned 18, a neighbor, who owned the Blooms & More flower shop downtown said she would be more than happy to give Justine a job as a delivery driver. Justine accepted her offer gratefully. She had a very hard time finding someone dependable to make the flower runs, which always seemed to result in losing clients. Three big companies had just changed florists because of inept drivers.

Weaving in and out of traffic all day didn’t bother Justine. Whither dodging tourists with tall margarita glasses or having a tour bus lay on their horn because she wasn’t going fast enough, nothing seemed to frazzle her… nothing… except the Las Vegas summer.

The delivery van had top-notch refrigeration in the back for the flowers, but up front, there was none. On a regular 110 degree summer day it was hard to be cheery with no air conditioning.

It was mid July, a sweltering 115 degrees when Justine was ready to end her route by making her regular drop off of 20 dozen lilies to the backstage door of Hallelujah Hollywood at Bally’s Hotel. Pushing her dolly brimming with flower boxes, she nodded to Dot, the backstage manager. “Justine you look awful”, she caught her reflection in a mirror and almost scared herself. Her face beet red, limp hair hanging in her eyes. Dot motioned for Justine to sit in a chair, while she returned to a pensive phone conversation, than SLAM! she hung up.

What’s the matter with you? said Justine. Dots eyes focused on Justin with a sudden sparkle. Justin, you’ve been coming here for years, a delivery girl that looks like a model, are you ready to make a change? Justin replied, honestly, I have been thinking along those lines myself. Dot grabbed a Showgirl costume from a hanger, put this on and meet me stage right behind the curtain. Feeling somewhat refreshed after resting, Justine thought, what do I have to lose?


Every night at 6pm and 11pm the grand finale number would included sinking the Titanic . Each chorus girl represented a piece of the ship. It seems Pam, one of the girls in the show had just quit, Justin was to be her replacement.

Justin1-lrA short time later Justine emerged from the dressing room looking every bit a Las Vegas Showgirl. Scurrying up behind her was Dot with Justine’s piece of the Titanic.

The curtain rose, the Titanic once again had four smoke stacks and Justine had a new career.

Showgirl Rag Doll Mercedes’ Adventure

Mercedes5-lrHere is another new Showgirl rag doll in our Rag Dolls Rising Etsy store. This is Mercedes.

As a child Mercedes loved to sew. Even before she could handle a needle and thread she was poking holes in construction paper and “sewing” them together with bits of yarn. As a teenager her family and friends relied on her to take up hems, sew on buttons and fix ripped pants, which Mercedes didn’t mind doing at all.

One day she realized that other people actually made money doing this type of work, so she set out to find a job that would pay her for what she wanted to do anyway. She joined a group of ladies in the wardrobe department of the Lido De Paris show at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. Mercedes was very dedicated to keeping the Showgirl’s outfits in top-notch condition.

She was just starting her fifth year working for the Lido when one night something happened. It was New Years Eve, so the showroom was packed to capacity. This was a holiday when Celebrities would regularly pop into the audience and thrill the crowd. The chorus girls were in their places while the technicians flipped the lights on. Lead Showgirl Bridgette Petits Fores strutted forward, looking into the sea faces instead of in front of her. Before she could catch herself the heel of her shoe slipped on a peanut shell ,legStage-150x150 left on stage by a careless stagehand. WHAM! she landed on her nose. Picking herself off the floor she surveyed the damage. Much to her horror a gaping hole was torn in her stocking. Mercedes rushed to her side, sewing kit under her arm. With a whirl of threads she wove the hole closed, so fast and seamlessly that no one could believe their eyes. The show went on and ended with a standing ovation. Backstage Bridgette was so grateful to Mercedes that she gave her an honorary showgirls’ costume, Mercedes1-lrwhich Mercedes wore once, for these pictures, than proudly hung above her sewing machine to remind her of the day she saved the show.

Showgirl Rag Doll Rachel’s Adventure


This is Rachel, one of the new Rag Dolls Rising Premium Dolls. I didn’t mention it in the previous post but this is a new line in addition to the dolls we already have in our Etsy store. We call them Premium because they are sewn with speciality fabrics and take extra time for the wonderful accessories.

Anyway… Rachel came from a midwest family and had three brothers. Her father became a local hero when he saved the fire1whole town from disaster, extinguishing a blazing fire at the local market with his garden hose.

Of course her three brothers became firemen, but Rachel had other plans.She moved to Las Vegas in 2005 to attend UNLV with a major in Microbiology. It was her dream to find the cure for a disease.

Although Rachel found a roommate her finances were holding her back from taking all the class that she wanted to. One morning over granola and green tea, her roommate, Julie, suggested she get a job dancing at the Tropicana Rachel1-lrHotel’s Follies Bergere. She started in June of 2006 and loved it so much she decided to stay.

Showgirl Rag Doll Sandy’s Adventure


This is the first of the new rag doll showgirls, Sandy. I thought you might like to know more about her.

Sandy was lucky to have a very talented mother who loved all things to do with dancing. Many mornings Sandy would wake up to the most beautiful music danceplaying on the giant record player in the middle of the living room. There would be her mother, gracefully floating across the oriental rug, spinning around in her ballet pointe shoes.

Sandy knew what she wanted to be when she grew up, and that was a dancer like her mom.

So began her many years of dance lessons which did eventually pay off.

As a young adult Sandy and her family moved to Las Vegas, which also payed off because Las Vegas is a great place for a dancer to live.

One day Sandy heard that the MGM Hotel , (at that time located where Bally’s is now on the strip),was holding auditions for their show, Jubilee!

She tried out and of course landed the part.Sandy5-lr

Sandy’s favorite part of the day is getting ready to go on stage, maybe someday you can see her show! If you can’t make it you can always see her in our Rag Dolls Rising Etsy store!

A Cowgirl Rag Doll Adventure part 3

Oh no! exclaimed Sam, one of the kittens wandered away and everyone else is asleep including Molly. I’m not allowed out at night, but I have to find her. Tossing a cowboy hat on her ruffled hair she dropped from the opened window WHAM!, onto the porch. Following the little paw prints through a stretch of run1barren grass land, Sam began to run faster, flailing her arms as she realized the kitten was headed for the river at the foot of the towering mountains.

This time of the year the melting snow and jagged rocks created a treacherous concoction which was no place for a two-week old kitten.

Sam was rushing so fast that she fell on her hat once, than on her pigtails twice. There she is….playing with a fish, with no idea her safety was in

babyhucopyquestion. Reaching out, Sam grabbed a hand full of soft fur, jerking the kitten back before she met her fate. Gotcha! yelled Sam as she clutched the little kitten tightly.

Sam hurried home and was not punished, but told she was a very brave cowgirl for risking her own life. Ma made hot fudge sundaes for everyone.

sam3Sam was happy even though she had to spend some time recuperating after the rocks had torn her neck seam and broken her smile. But the doll maker stitched her back up and even gave her a pretty felt necklace to cover her scar. Molly was especially grateful, so she licked Sam’s face whenever she saw her, which was the best reward of all!

A Cowgirl Rag Doll Adventure part 2

Molly, the big orange cat was feeling especially tired since she had a litter of kittens two weeks ago. Her she comes, blogdrink11from under the porch, not exactly running like she use to but waddling as fast as she could with twelve kittens under her feet.

When they were finished Sam sat on the damp lawn, petted Molly and played with the kittens until Ma called her in.

The horses and chickens were in the barn, the cats curled in their box as the family filed upstairs to their rooms.

As usual Sam sank into her feather mattress and fell instantly to sleep…for awhile, than around midnight she sprung awake not having any idea why. There were no noises or lights and she was exhausted.

blogskyNo matter how she tried, sleep would not come. Dazed and confused she looked out of her window and into the cold clear night. Sam glanced down on the furry cats huddled tightly together. Maybe I should count kittens instead of sheep..1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11…… Sam’s eyes traced a path leading out of the gate where a small line of kitten prints disappeared…..

A Cowgirl Rag Doll Adventure part1


There once was a little rag doll Cowgirl named Sam. She lived in a two-story farm-house with her family in South Dakota.

blogmtr1They lived so close to Mt. Rushmore that on occasion the whole house shook when George Washington scratched his chin on the roof.

Sam liked her chores around the farm, especially when they included taking care of the animals. Every morning she brushed the ponies until their coats were as shiny as the kitchen floor after mom waxed it with the new Zamboni.blogzam

Every afternoon she flung fist fulls of grain into the rickety pens as the chickens ate it almost before it hit the ground.

But Sam’s favorite chore came every evening. She would fill a ceramic bowl with ice-cold milk and put it in the grass under the only tree in their little yard. blogdrink11Sam knew if she counted to twenty, Molly, the big orange farm cat would show up for dinner. . . continued next post
